You may want to backup your WordPress site to your computer for Development purpose or as a backup of your site. But it’s not that easy to create an exact replica of your live site on your computer. Backing up your WordPress site to your local server [Offline, on your computer] requires you to have the WordPress core files, your wp-content files and folders and your entire database.

So, in order to create a backup of your WordPress site on your computer you have 3 (three) ways to do it:-

  1. Manually – By Downloading the files, folders and media files.
  2. BackupBuddy – Cloning your WordPress using BackupBuddy Plugin.
  3. wpTimecapsule – Using this service to get all your WordPress files.

Without any more chit chat, let’s jump into the details – Backup WordPress Site to Computer

1. Manually – By Downloading the files, folders and media files.

If you already have some files and folders from your WordPress on your computer and want to download only those files and folders that you don’t have, then this method is the perfect fit for you. Downloading manually all the files, folders and media files is a bit tiring, time-consuming and its manual process.

[This process is not recommended for new bloggers or the ones who are new to cPanel and phpMyAdmin, its best suited for developers who know what they want.]

How To Backup WordPress Site To Computer

To get started you will need the following.

  • A local server running on your computer (Using xampp, wamp or mamp).
  • Access to your cPanel & phpMyAdmin.
  • WordPress core files (optional).

So I assume you have local server running on your computer, if not then here is How to Install a local Server on Computer for WordPress.  First setup a local directory on your local server/host with the same name as your WordPress directory on your cPanel, in order to make the offline site function the same as your live server.

Login to your cPanel > File Manager and select the folder where your WordPress files resides. Compress and zip them up through your file manager in cPanel. Download them to your computer. Once downloaded extract them to a new folder in your local server/host by creating a new folder with the same name as the folder in your cPanel.

After unzipping and extracting the WordPress files to the folder, edit the wp-config.php and change the values of host, user, password. You dont need to change the database name as we are going to create a new database with the same name.

Login to your cPanel > phpMyAdmin and locate your WordPress database. Click the database name from the left sidebar and then choose the click on the “Export” tab. On the following screen, select the “Custom” export method. You will then be presented with a selection of databases to export:

Create a database in your localserver > phpMyadmin with the same name as on your cPanel > phpMyAdmin’s database name. Click the import tab on your localhost > phpMyadmin and import the csv file that you have exported in the previous step.

After you are done creating and importing data to your new offline database, you need to edit a few things on your offline database. Click the database name and search for “wp_options” table, you’ll see a list of table names like this:

How To Backup WordPress Site To Computer-local-wordpress-site

The two fields you need to edit are “siteurl” (highlighted above) and “home” (sometimes you may need to navigate the second page to find). Just click the “Edit” buttons next to each field, and replace the URL contained in “option_value” with “http://localhost/yourfoldername/” which is your offline URL for your WordPress site running on local server.

That’s it! If you now navigate to “http://localhost/yourfoldername/”, your site should load up in all its glory. Please note that if you use custom permalinks, you will need to change them to default permalinks you use in your live site. To change permalink, Visit wp-Admin > Settings > permalinks.

2. BackupBuddy – Cloning your WordPress using BackupBuddy Plugin.

This is the best and the easiest process to backup your WordPress site to your computer. BackupBuddy has several features from backup to cloning, you can check our unbiased Review of BackupBuddy Plugin. BackupBuddy comes with a very easy option t backup your entire site to your computer or clone it to any url on local server or any remote server.

backupbuddy review - restore migrate

It comes with a simple and easy migration wizard that provides you a file named importbuddy.php which you upload to your new server or your offline development folder and run the file by accessing it through the URL.

Before you run the script through your browser, you need to download the zip file from the same page of BackupBuddy or your remote cloud server where your backupBuddy has saved the backups. Once you have downloaded the zip file, place it on your local server folder and run the script through the url. Your url should look something like http://localhost/yourfoldername/importbuddy.php

Follow the onscreen steps and your offline site is ready and you will have a complete Backup of your WordPress Site to your Computer.

3. wpTimecapsule – Using this service to get all your WordPress files.

It annoying for anyone to update a plugin every day since new updates are rolled frequently by their developers. In this article we will show you 3 easy and Simple ways to enable automatic updates for WordPress plugins.

Why You Should Automatically Update WordPress Plugins?

By default WordPress can automatically update itself when a minor or security update is released but for major releases you have to manually update WordPress. But in case of plugins, they don’t get automatic updates by default.

Since security of your site is crutial and to keep it safe and stable you need to use the latest version which is only possible by updating WordPress, plugins and themes.

To update plugins you have to either do it manually or use some techniques.

Setting up 3 Simple Ways to Automatically Update WordPress Plugins.

  1. Automatic plugin updates using WordPress account
  2. Setting up Automatic Update via PHP codes
  3. Automatically Install Updates for Plugins in WordPress using Plugins

[Note: The above are the quick links, Click on any of these to navigate directly to the selected sections.]

Once connected visit wordpress.com and click on My Sites on top left corner and choose your blog which you have connected.

Choose Plugins from left sidebar, it will list all the plugins you have installed in your WordPress blog.

2. Setting up Automatic Update via PHP codes

If you have a little knowledge about codes and WordPress editor then this process would be really easy for you. To set your WordPress to automatically install all plugins updates, you just need to add a single line of code to your theme’s functions.php file.

<em>add_filter( 'auto_update_plugin', '__return_true' );</em>

This line tells WordPress automatic updater script to automatically install plugin updates when a new update is available.

3. Automatically Install Updates for Plugins in WordPress using Plugins

If you don’t want to have your hands dirty with the codes above then the same result can be achieved by using a free plugin from WordPress repository known as Automatic Plugin Updates.

Moreover if you have lots of plugins and you wish to keep a few of them automatically updated, then this plugin is for your rescue.

Cons

The only downside of this plugin is that dropbox allows you to have 2 Gb of storage for free, which means anything above that will cost you money.

Cloaking Affiliates link or any other links in WordPress is now just easy as copy and paste. For those who are not sure what does link cloaking means, then in this article we will explain what is Link Cloaking and how easily you can clock any links in wordpress using some free or paid plugins.

What is Link Cloaking and When do you need it?

Link cloaking is a technique used to make long URLs into a shorter and more user frindly. Link cloaking allows to turn long unreadable links to shorten memoriazable links.

Most affiliate links are lengthy, hard to remember, with some weird parameters and contains the user id / user affiliate name and the product id. The uncloaked, raw affiliate url may look something like this.

http://www.theaffiliatesite.com/products/cat=24&?product_id=1223&affiliate=1623

With Link cloaking you can shorten this ugly, unfriendly non-seo links to a clean, seo friendly link.

Here is the breakdown of the above cloaked url

site url   =   “https://www.smartactiveblogger.com”
base        =   “refer”
product name   =   “This will be the product name, in short and readable by your visitors. We use refer in our cloaked links on SmartActiveBlogger. Some other popular URL bases are goto, out, go, recommends, get, etc.”

It all depends upto you as what you want to use as your base.

12 Best WordPress Affiliate Plugins and Tools for Cloaking Links. You should have one from this list.

Link Cloaking should be used by everyone who has an affiliate url in their blog. Link cloaking has many benefits.

Here are some of the benefits of cloaking links.

1. Additional Layer of tracking: Some link cloaking plugins allow you to track the hits, geolocation and the IP address of the cloaked links. Helping you easily track the high performing affiliate links and optimise it in the furute.

2. Editable & Changeable: This is the best thing that a link cloaker provides. It allows you to change the URL of the affiliate source without turning your link into 404 error. If any affiliatesite changes their affiliate product urls, then your affiliate url may turn into 404 error if you dont cloak urls, but if you use any cloaking plugins then its just editing and pasting the new affiliate url.

3. AutoLinker: Not every link cloaking provides this feature but some does. Like thirstyaffiliates provides this autolinker feature for a premium price. This feature is great if you want to automatically turn a word into a url with your cloaked affiliate link in it.

Like on SmartActiveBlogger, we use auto linker and target words like bluehost, wpengine, MediaTemple. Every post that has the word bluehost automatically turns into an affiliate url.

4. Protecting against hijacking: Cloaked links also provide protection from your links getting hijacked. Hijacked links will be of no use to you as the affiliate id in the link will be changed to the hijackers affiliate id.

5. Easy & Reliable: Cloaked links allow you to easily manage them from your admin interface and inject them into any words or post with just a click. It also  helps you to manage your affiliate links as all your cloaked links are under one roof.

We hope this article helped you learn how to cloak links on your WordPress site. You may also want to check out our list of the 12 Best WordPress Affiliate Plugins and Tools for Cloaking Links.

Incremental Backups – How wpTimeCapsule Works?

WP Time Capsule is really smart when it comes to create backup of your WordPress site. Its so designed that it will have your entire WordPress site backed up when you run the backup for the first time, and after that it will only update the files and database that have been changed or updated automatically or manually by you. It only updates the changes you make thereafter.

The reason behind implementing the incremental backups it to avoid the hiccups that your server and blog gets you you run the backup service. The stress of backing up your entire database and WordPress files over and over again is really tiring and frustrating, and truly speaking I don’t enjoy taking daily backups.

Recently one of our regular visitors reported a very unusual issue with their wordpress editor. The issue was that all the text inside the editor has turned white and more importantly the visual buttons and icons has disappeared and the ability to switch between Visual Editor and text editor was also disabled. So in this article I will show you how you can fix the white text and missing buttons in WordPress Visual Editor.

Some facts and hints of the issue:

  • Editor does not load
  • You cant switch from the Visual Editor to Text Editor
  • You can highlight the text and see it (it is white)
  • All javascript files are in the wp-admin folder
  • google libraries has been installed and didnt fix the problem

Note for Beginners: If you are looking for hidden buttons that you might see in screenshots of other sites, then you are probably looking for the Kitchen sink. You would have to click on the Kitchen sink icon to see these other options such as Underline, copy from word etc.

How to Fix White Text and Missing Buttons in WordPress Visual Editor

Reasons and Fixes for White text and Missing Buttons

Note:Clicking on the below links will take you directly on that topic/section.

Due to TinyMCE script

The script located at tinymcs folder is responsible for the buttons and text in the editor. Every time you update the wordpress, the wordpress runs a few checks and then deflates and zips the files to install the new update. While doing this, it has been seen that some server doesn’t fully supports deflating and zipping and it messes the files. If for some reason your tinymce file is corrupted then try replacing /wp-includes/js/tinymce/ folder with a fresh copy.

To get a fresh copy, download new & latest wordpress zip for wordpress.org, unzip it, and copy and paste the new tinymce code to the old file.

Due to WordPress database

As I said earlier, the wordpress runs the deflate & can_compress_scripts checks while updating the wordpress. If your server doesn’t supports can_compress_scripts, but wordpress thinks your server supports, then it will change the value from 0 (zero) to 1. This can conflict with the editor, so  use PHPMyAdmin to search and edit inside your WordPress database in “wp_options” table for the record called “can_compress_scripts”.

If it has a value of “1” for the “option_value”, change this to “0” and save the change. You will find your editor working again!

(Note: Sometimes this record won’t even exist, so in that case you need to add it. Look for a WordPress database that does have it in order to see what you need to add.)

Fix with wp-config.php script

WordPress loads all the js files separately to ensure you have a faster loading site and responsive site. But since you are facing issues with the editor, you need to add a line of code or edit the code. Normally if the code is present, it looks like

define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, true);

So all you need to do is either change the code or paste the code, after the define(‘WP_DEBUG’, false); define code, most probably at the line 81.

define('CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS', false);

Clearing the Cache.

I have faced this problem several times, but for me hard reloading the wp-admin worked. You need to either clear the cache or use another browser, or either hard reload the site. To hard reload the site, you need to right-click on the site > inspect > and then right-click on the reload icon, choose empty cache and hard-reload and you are done.

empty-cache-and-hard-reload-wordpress

If this does not fix your issue, maybe the issue is with your install?

Fixing via updating WordPress.

When you update your WordPress to a new version, it does a one time only test of your server environment to see if it supports compressing using the “deflate” method, if it thinks that your server supports this, then it will set “can_compress_scripts” “option_value” to have a value of “1”. But it OFTEN gets this wrong! (or it just doesn’t do “deflate” correctly etc.).

So you can manually update the wordpress or try updating the wordpress through the wordpress admin dashboard.

Fixing by Plugins

Most of the wordpress errors are due to the plugins and in half of the cases, deactivating wordpress has fixed the error. Try deactivating all plugins from your wp-admin > plugins. If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If you can’t deactivate the plugins for some reason, then you can manually deactivate the plugin via ftp by renaming the plugins folder to backup-plugins and then creating an empty plugins folder.

If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Sixteen theme to rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

Fixing via Google Libraries.

This plugin allows the site to use common javascript libraries from Google’s AJAX Libraries CDN, rather than from WordPress’s own copies. WordPress loads js files from its own directory and for any reason if the js files are corrupt or missing the editor will stop responding.

Google Libraries plugin is available for wordpress in repository.

Fixing via .htaccess

In rare cases, the htaccess files play any role. If the above solutions didn’t work for you then you should better give this a chance. Edit your .htaccess file through FTP and remove these lines from .htaccess file.

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^[^=]*$
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} %2d|- [NC] RewriteRule .? – [F,L]

When the wordpress will load, it will rectify the .htaccess to its correct values.

Using TinyMCA Advanced Plugin

This plugin enables the advanced features of TinyMCE, the WordPress WYSIWYG editor. Since wordpress is regularly wpdated, some plugins may turn outdated quickly and turn incompatible with the latest version of wordpress.

Also some JS files from TinyMCE may become corrupted. As TinyMCE is responsible for the editor buttons, this problem may arise. This can be overcome by replacing it with a fresh copy.

Final Thoughts

These are the possible set of solutions to Fix White Text and Missing Buttons in WordPress Visual Editor. For each website there can be a different solution.

If your theme is facing the issue of sidebar below content issue or content below sidebar, then this article will definitely help you solve this. Before you begin you need to figure out where the problem lies.

In this article we have showed how you can identify the problem, if you have already identified the problem then click on the below options to directly jump of those section.

This issue occurs due to the following reasons.

Where does this issue exist?

Figuring out where this issue is occurring on your site can be a great indicator of where the problem exists.

Issues with HTML Elements

Fixing issues of the div elements.

Okay, so you’ve pinpointed where the problem is. The first step should be identifying any issues with the div blocks in your file.

Check to see if all the div files have proper opening(<div>) and closing(</div>) tags. To check the divs element use “inspect element” feature on chrome or firefox.

This issue is due to an extra or a missing, which can be easily fixed by adding or removing the divs.

Sidebar Below Content: How To Fix Sidebar Below Content Error In WordPress

you can right-click on your web page and select Inspect Element. This can make it easier for you to troubleshoot issues with the code on your site.

Issues with CSS Elements

Fixing issues of the CSS elements.

Its the css that makes the visual so appealing, but a little mistake can turn that beauty into a cobweb like design. Since there are a lot of screen sizes which may sometime turn the design down or even break the design.

Screen sizes are expressed as media-screen, the width of the web page has a lot to do with the how the elements display. The standard size of a div element is 960px, and if the width , margins and paddings exceed the size of 960px then it will overflow and will produce sidebar below content.

To make this changes you can either use ftp or use the Appearance > Editor and edit the style.css and make the require changes.

Floating Errors That Cause Issues with Your Site’s Sidebar

If for any reason your theme’s div elements is missing the float value, then the elements doesn’t know exactly which side the elements should float to each other.

The more important property is the float property, which typically appears in two formats:

  • float: left;
  • float: right;

FREE EBOOK: HOW TO GET 25,000 VISITORS PER MONTH.

Does this issue exist on pages?

Create a new page and view it, if you face the sidebar under content issue then analyze whether it html problem or css problem.

Edit page.php if its an HTML problem or style.css if its css problem.

Does this issue exist on pages with blog posts?

Open a few blog post and check whether this issue appears on blog posts or not. If the sidebar under content issue appears on that single post then you should edit the single.php using .FTP or Appearance > Editor.

Does this issue only exist on a specific page or blog post?

If your sidebar appears below content on a specific page or blog post, then the content on that page has some extra divs or is missing some divs.

How can I prevent my sidebar from dropping below the content?

We have troubleshooted this issue numerous times, and everytime the reason is the same. There is an extra opening div tag or an unclosed div element on the page. The only solution is to find the DIV tag relating with this issue and either add or remove a div opening/closing tag.

Look the above Image and the below image for reference.

Sidebar Below Content: How To Fix Sidebar Below Content Error In WordPress

Issues with Plugins

Only 1 Out of 10 times, a plugin is responsible for this issue. Plugins that add an extra feature to the page may mistakely add an extra DIV tag on the page which may often break the page layout and shift the sidebar below content.

Right sidebar showing below content or Left sidebar showing above content are some othe issues of an extra DIV tag.

Final Thoughts

This is a simple issue but it can be difficult for novice wordpress users an bloggers to fix it by themselves. You can either learn basic HTML and try to fix it or hire a freelancer from fiverr just @ $5 [https://www.fiverr.com/s2/079f575105]

If you are adding any codes on your theme by yourself, its better to check that all opening tags are corresponding to thie closing tags, and also follow the web designers standards of using the tree view while coding or adding your own codes.

Lastly, if you can’t figure it out, don’t hesitate to politely ask your theme’s developer what the issue might be. They may just have the solution you need! or just hire a freelancer at fiverr for $5
